How to Sow

Sow outdoors in spring in full sun after danger of frost. In the South, look for a site that gets afternoon shade. Sow seeds evenly and thinly and cover with 1/8" of fine soil. Firm lightly; keep evenly moist.

How to Grow

Seedlings emerge in 10-21 days depending on soil and weather conditions. Thin to stand about 12" apart when seedlings are large enough to handle. Plants will flower for several weeks if deadheaded; water deeply during dry weather. Cut back stems to the basal foliage after the first frost. If plants outgrow their space or become crowded, dig the clumps in spring and divide them. Propogate by division.

Harvesting

Plant scabiosa in sunny perennial beds, especially at the front of the garden. They can be combined with salvias, coreopsis, sedums, daylilies, and lavender. Flowers are long-lasting in the vase, and regular cutting encourages plants to form more flowers. Butterflies and beneficial insects are attracted by the blossoms.
